What is Tooth Erosion?

Tooth erosion is a dental problem that arises from the breakdown or loss of tooth enamel, and is usually caused by an acid attack. The enamel is the protective coating of a tooth that serves to cover the more sensitive inner teeth area. As this protective coating is worn down with enamel erosion, the dentine inside the tooth becomes exposed, causing discomfort in the form of teeth sensitivity.

It is important to know what causes tooth erosion so you can protect yourself from more serious dental problems. Aside from sensitive teeth problems, you will also be exposed to tooth decay and gum problems if you experience enamel erosion.

Tooth Erosion Causes

One of the main culprits of tooth erosion is the high consumption of food and drinks that have a high acidity level. The high concentration of acids in food and beverages attack the tooth enamel, and in time causes the erosion of this protective tooth layer. Fruit juices, soft drinks, and other carbonated beverages consumed regularly and in large amounts can harm the enamel. Sugary food items can also harm the tooth enamel, especially if good oral hygiene is not followed to counter-attack the negative effects.

Grinding the teeth repeatedly and for a long period of time can eventually erode the tooth enamel, causing the dentine to be exposed. Other causes of enamel erosion include gastrointestinal problems, an acid reflux disease, genetics, and side effects coming from certain medications.
