How to Deal with Painful Mouth Sores

Mouth sores are painful and cause a lot of inconvenience, especially if they turn up in places in your mouth where they can frequently be bothered by the slightest movement – even with a simple smile. Also called canker sores, they can be triggered by a number of factors, including: food allergies, stress, medications, and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. Once they develop, it may take a few days before they become fully healed, so you will have to do something to manage the pain and discomfort while the sores are still making their presence felt.

Gargling with a solution of one teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in half a cup of warm water can do wonders in alleviating the pain of a mouth sore, and also helps fight the bacteria in the area for faster healing. A saltwater solution, on the other hand, can also be swished in the mouth to help heal the open sore and also to ease the discomfort. A damp tea bag pressed gently to the sore will help neutralise the acids in the area to facilitate healing. Vitamin E oil or raw honey can be applied directly to the sore to promote faster healing.

Aside from the home remedies, you can also make the mouth sure problem easier to manage by avoiding the things that can irritate it further. Stay away from acidic or spicy foods that can make the sore more painful and irritated. If possible, avoid eating hard food items that may poke the sore, aggravating the condition and possibly worsening your pain. You can drink cold liquids to ease the discomfort caused by the mouth sores, and it is best to stick to soft food items while waiting for the sore to heal.
